We raise the awareness on HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections among Nigerian youths through our Promoting Teen-Friendly Education for Control of HIV/AIDS Transmission (PROTECT) project. Through forming peer clubs, we promote abstinence and safe choices, as well as facilitate behavioral change and risk reduction amongst youth. Our staff and volunteers receive training prior to becoming peer club mentors or supervisors.
In focus group discussion sessions with their peers, club members feel comfortable talking freely and debating common issues affecting their sexuality and life choices. They also serve as peer educators, reaching other youth within their communities and encouraging them to join the club. We are creating a guide that will explain how to establish and maintain peer clubs.
Another component of the project is promoting the use of condoms. We train health personnel on proper use of condoms and distribute them to truck drivers and college and university students.
