Schools for Africa

We work to ensure that more opportunities for education are available for youth and the illiterate. Our Schools for Africa campaign has helped thousands get an education. The campaign assists rural communities in the construction and rehabilitation of basic primary schools and utilizes local public works departments and Ministries of Education.

The program began in 1987 with the construction of 100 schools in South Africa. Since then, we have constructed or refurbished more than 250 schools in seven African countries through financial support received from generous donors. As part of the school construction effort, 450 construction team workers and 675 local school management committee members have received skills and project management training.

In addition to providing a conducive learning environment for teachers, students and educators, the project alleviates overcrowding, increases student enrollment rates, decreases dropout rates, and brings schools closer to communities so that students won't have to walk long distances to attend distant schools. Our schools also benefit community members significantly by providing space for meetings and adult literacy projects. Constructing and refurbishing schools in South Africa remains a high priority for IFESH.
