Empowering African Nations Since 1981

IFESH education projects in Guinea.

Guinea

Our work in Guinea began in 1999 with the USAID-funded African Education Initiative Support project when we recruited and assigned International Educators for Africa and International Fellows Program participants to education institutions and nongovernmental organizations in the cities of Conakry, Mamou and Dinguiraye where they assisted in increasing the quality of education and capacity building. Volunteers taught English and other major subjects and participated in promoting HIV/AIDS awareness, gender equity in education and the awareness of female genital mutilation. Fellows assigned to nongovernmental organizations assisted with food security, agriculture and rural development, micro-enterprise promotion, project development, HIV/AIDS awareness and the use of computers and English language training.

Currently, our volunteer educators are providing technical assistance to teachers, students and instructors at the Center for Professional Training, an education institution that trains students for employment in various industrial job skills that are required by Alcoa, an aluminum company, in the Boké region, mainly in mining. In addition, our volunteer educators focus on training pre- and in-service teachers, teaching English as a Second Language, the development of audiovisual materials, curriculum development and counseling at the secondary level. Our project is made possible by grant funding we received from the Alcoa Foundation.

To complement our education projects, we ship and distribute donated books and education materials to schools and resource centers.
