Our project in Benin focuses on ensuring that a quality basic education is more widely available on an equitable and sustainable basis. Under the International Educators for Africa program, we assign volunteer educators with expertise in early childhood education and primary education, teacher training and professional development to local teacher-training colleges and universities.
Emphasis is placed on teaching English as a Second Language, child-centered curriculum development, public health, gender equity and computer science. Educators establish and maintain teacher resource centers in teacher-training colleges and universities. The teacher resource centers give pre- and in-service teachers, school administrators, students and neighboring community members access to relevant information and communication technologies, computer literacy, modern teaching and learning materials, and reading reference materials to enhance teaching and learning outcomes. Our volunteer educators conduct periodic special training sessions and workshops in the teacher resource centers.
From 2001-2008, we implemented the Pedagogical Support for Effectiveness of Primary Education (PESEPE) teacher training project funded by USAID/Benin. The project contributed directly to USAID's strategic objective for education in Benin - that "more children receive, on an equitable basis, quality basic education." Specifically, the PESEPE project assisted in realizing USAID's intermediary results of improving the quality of instruction in primary schools and increasing the national capacity to provide training and educational support to primary school teachers. Under the project, we worked in 36 school districts and trained 10,000 teachers, 2,500 school directors and held nearly 180 workshops. We also produced and disseminated 20,000 copies of a pamphlet that included articles on gender equity, education issues and health.
