Positive, Living Positive

Peace walked into the IFESH office in Nigeria with swollen legs and in tears. She had been diagnosed HIV positive during a doctor's visit that IFESH sponsored. She was referred to IFESH for child care and was enrolled into a support group, where she received clinical care and a basic care kit. Peace was unemployed and had issues with her husband following disclosing that she had HIV and needed money to take care of herself and her baby.

She routinely and regularly attended support group activities, where people living with HIV/AIDS were educated about the disease, positive living, stigma and discrimination, among other issues. With continuous counseling and close contact with IFESH, she was self motivated to become a volunteer for IFESH. She was trained by IFESH in HIV counseling and testing, and Home Based Care. She is currently working as a volunteer and HIV counselor, and is a dedicated member of the network of people living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria where she now coordinates a support group of about 50 women and 40 children. She is also now self-employed, making calls and selling recharge cards. She is courageous to talk about the disease, and is living positively with the virus. She and her baby are healthy and doing very well.
