IFESH volunteer educators assist with building a water pipeline in a Kenyan village.

Kenya

Our current focus in Kenya is on increasing access to and improving quality of basic education and increasing enrollment rates of children from marginalized areas in the northeastern and coastal parts of the country.

Our work in Kenya began in 1995 when we assigned volunteer educators to universities, middle schools and primary schools. In addition, we provided textbooks and school supplies for distribution to educational institutions through our Support of sub-Saharan Africa project.

In September 2009, the American Educators for Africa program will enable us to place greater emphasis on providing education support mechanisms through teacher training in the areas of greatest need. Through the support of USAID, our activities will increase the number of children from marginalized populations that attend and complete school, improve teacher-training practices, and provide professional development for teachers and administrators.
