Reverend Sullivan, believed that in order for emerging democracies in Africa to be successful and for law and order to be upheld, a nation's citizens must be literate. We continue Reverend Sullivan's philosophy of self-help through helping Africans help themselves.
In Africa, education is cut short for many youth because of the lack of available textbooks. In some African countries, as many as 10 - 20 youth share a single textbook and some have never held a textbook. Supporting IFESH in shipping text books and educational materials to Africa provides a unique opportunity to be directly associated with assisting Africans with enabling themselves to be change agents for their own cause.
In addition to sending U.S. volunteer educators to Africa , IFESH also provides books and educational supplies - since these are often in short supply in schools, colleges of education and universities in the countries where IFESH works. Since 1995, we have shipped and distributed more than $45 million worth of books and educational materials to the continent.
Currently, we obtain books through our partnership with Books for Africa, a Minnesota-based non-profit organization. Books for Africa obtains the books from publishers' donations and provides them to us free of charge. From donations we receive, IFESH pays shipping and in-country distribution costs and we utilize our African-based offices to distribute the books to schools, colleges of education and universities. Our IFESH country representatives work with state and local education officials on where and how the donated textbooks are to be delivered.
During the Fiscal year ending September 30, 2010, 80,000 textbooks valued at more than $2 million were shipped and distributed in Ghana, Liberia and Nigeria . Each text book has an average value of $33 and the costs of shipping and distribution are $1.20 per book.
